One of my favorite Mahler books is "Mahler: His Life, Work, and World" by Kurt and Herta Blaukopf.

Mahler was—along with Picasso, Einstein, Freud, Kafka, and Joyce—a maker of our modern world.

Fischer is a good starting point and basically the best one volume bio of Mahler.
